Michael Mathers
Flugel Horn
Michael first began playing in Kew Band in 1977 as a member of the then Kew Youth Band before graduating to the 'senior band' a year later.
The son of Ian Mathers, Michael was always going to have an active involvement in the band. Although a cornet specialist (having played every cornet chair including Soprano over the years) he has also played Flugel, Solo Horn and Percussion.
His dedication to the band is unequalled. Michael has held every position on the committee at one time or another as well as Drum Major. He is the youngest person to ever receive Life Membership and is the longest serving playing member of the band. Currently he holds the position of Hon. Secretary.
Michael is proud to have been a member of both of Kew's Australian National victories in 1998 and 2000 and has been part of every overseas contest or tour except NZ 2005 and Guam.
In 2005 Michael moved to New Zealand and whilst there played percussion, cornet and horn with Canterbury Foundation Brass in Christchurch before returning to Kew Band in 2007.
In the time he has left outside of band, Michael is a professional Landscape Architect and CAD draftsperson.
